The North County Band Somnia was scheduled to join musical forces with Instar and poppies3 for a Music for Charity event benefiting the American Heart Association Saturday night.
"Saint Louis has a wonderful music scene," said Mike Heeley, Somnia guitarist and keyboard player. "If we can get it behind some organizations, we can do something to give back to the community and other charities." Due to production schedules, the Journal went to press prior to Saturday night's event.
The bands were to donate their time and talent as well as their cut of the entry fee.
"Not only are the bands getting together for the event," Heeley said. "Other people in the music industry, such as Industry Magazine, are joining in to do something for a common good."
Heeley's involvemnet with Music for Charity began a few years ago with college friend and Music for Charity founder Will Smith.
"Will said he wanted to get an event together, but didn't know how to get the bands," Heeley said. "I asked the other in Somnia - Mike Lowder and Aaron Popp - and they were very interested in playing. then I asked some other bands about playing in the charity event and the response was great."
Somnia, which had it's compact disc release party in December, was to play the first 45-minute set followed by Instar and poppies3.
The event was at the Firehouse, 3221 Olive St. It's the second Music for Charity show, but the first fund-raising event the organization has put together.
