Musician's Guide and Directory

October 2011
First and foremost, we at Somnia and the STL MGD the St. Louis Musician's Guide and Directory would like to extend our prayers and thoughts to the families of those who have lost their lives in this tragedy; every single person who has perished due to this horrific attack on the United States died with great honor, and for that they are, in many people's eyes...modern day saints.
We would also like to extend our heartfelt admiration fr those who are being strong because of all of this...getting on with their lives, going back to work and showing the world that America is the best country in the world...WE WILL overcome this tragedy and rise from the ashes and ruins, a better nation United, not divided; together, not separate.
We also wish everyone who is reading this; solice and comfort that for some crazy reason, in the grand scheme of things there is a divine and universal plan...that out of the dark there will be a great light and great hope.
My friend David Ledden from the Kansas City band Cyclamatic put it best when he said, "all of the elements of this tragedy are polar opposites of rock and roll"
Music, specifically rock music, is best when it's fun, creative and most importantly doesn't take itself too seriously. Since September 11th, we've all found it hard to be a band. I feel a little guilty that I'm promoting a fun rock show when there are thousands of people lives crushed due to a senseless act of violence. It is near impossible to send an email promoting your next show without wanting to tell everyone that you hurt, that the world hurts because of this. Not quite the sales pitch one is going for when asking people to come out to a fun-filled rock n' roll show.
So how does this relate to you, the hard working musician in the St. Louis area? Well, in regards to your music career, it may not have a direct impact, but the music business is only one aspect of our lives. Use this as a constant reminder that we all need to start living as if this life we have is precious, because if definitely is. Work hard to be seen and noticed in the music business. Follow that dream of stardom even harder, and don't forget to tell everyone who has mad a difference in your life that you love them. None of us are promised a tomorrow. So lets make a difference today. As the Beatle in Heaven once said, "Give Peace a Chance." Use this as your motto and spread it to others. A lot of good can come out of a little love.
