Supercrush CD Release Party Review - Playback STL
Monday December 19, 2005
There wasn’t a lot of elbow room at Off Broadway the night of Supercrush’s self-titled CD release party. Playing with friends and fellow local favorites Just Add Water and Somnia, Supercrush rounded out an unbeatable lineup for fans of local power pop. Truly, it was heartening to see such a large crowd in support of local music.
Just Add Water opened the show and, in a chivalrous display of community, deflected all applause toward the night’s real heroes, Supercrush. Maybe it’s the way JAW lead singer Steve Waller holds his microphone—upside down in one hand, his left, coincidentally sporting a shiny new gold band—or sweet talks his audience, but Off Broadway’s stage was just too small for this man and his band.
Next up was Somnia, still riding the wave of their first CD release, the Rock EP, this fall (yet another jam-packed affair, this one at the Hi-Pointe with Supercrush guesting). Guitarist Mike Heeley didn’t waste any time in proclaiming, “Rock ’n’ roll is not a spectator sport; get off your asses and rock!”
Finally, it was the headliners’ turn to rock the adoring house. Supercrush put on a true rock show, complete with scantily clad women (wearing Supercrush girlie tees, no less), dry ice, and black lights. The band took the stage to a cacophony of cheers and applause as overhead played AC/DC’s “For Those About To Rock.” About to? Hell, Supercrush did rock.
